Pew Marine Fellows 2017

Marine Fellows 2017
Software: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, ArcMap
Client: The Pew Charitable Trusts, Conservation Science

Every year, Pew awards fellowships to scientists in conservation-related fields. 2017 was a big year with 11 fellows promoted on social media, plus an extra “overview” illustration. I researched each topic to accurately convey their work. For example, Regina Eisert researches marine mammals in the Ross Sea, so I drew Ecotype C orcas, the local resident subtype. Janis Searles Jones studies climate change and vessel traffic in the Arctic, so I created a stylized map using sea ice extent data. My favorite, however, was the Adelie penguin for Yan Ropert-Coudert’s tile; I tracked down “penguin-cam” videos to ensure I was drawing an appropriately-shaped jellyfish.
